What Rockstar's support page says
The pre-order support article published by Rockstar states that the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI contains a download code inside the box, and that boxed copies become available starting 12 November — a week before release — specifically to support preloading.
That is the whole mechanism. You buy a box, you open a box, you type a code, you download the game like everyone else.
What you give up
- Offline install. A code cannot install a game. Launch day depends entirely on your connection and on Sony's or Microsoft's servers holding up.
- Resale and lending. A redeemed code is spent. There is no second-hand copy to sell, trade or hand to a friend.
- Preservation. Nothing on the shelf will install this game in ten years without a working storefront behind it.
Why it happened
Rockstar has not published a rationale, so the honest answer is that we do not know. The two explanations circulating are leak control — a disc is a data mine for anyone with a drive and patience — and margin, since a digital redemption avoids manufacturing and the retail cut on a disc.
The practical consequence is that physical sales for GTA 6 will be a rounding error in the numbers, and that the date that actually matters for buyers is 12 November, not 19 November.
