The numbers, with a method behind them
The analytics firm Newzoo describes GTA 6 as having the strongest pre-order campaign on record, and projects it will sell between 37 and 51 million copies in its first week on sale — somewhere between $3.25 billion and $5.2 billion in launch revenue.
The base for that estimate is narrower and more concrete than the headline: roughly $180 million spent on digital pre-orders across the United States and the five largest European markets during the final week of June. Extrapolated to the rest of the world, Newzoo puts week-one pre-order spend at around $260 million.
The billion-dollar claim does not survive contact
The number that spread fastest — that GTA 6 made $1 billion in its first hour of pre-orders — is one Newzoo explicitly rejects, calling it absurd. Nothing in the industry has ever done that, and the pre-order curve for a November release still has months to run.
It is a useful reminder of how this cycle works: a screenshot with a big number travels much further than the spreadsheet that would falsify it.
Why it matters beyond bragging rights
Take-Two has guided to $8.0–8.2 billion in net bookings for fiscal 2027, with GTA 6 as the primary driver. Pre-order velocity is the first real evidence of whether that guidance is conservative or optimistic — and the first official data point lands with the company's earnings call in August.
